A Little Break

As some of you may know I have been working at a Tech clothing store for the past month and a half. It's exhausting. When it's busy, it's just non stop walk walk walk talk talk talk stand walk walk run walk fold fold fold fold fold. I'm getting really good at stuff though. Like talking to customers. Every day or so we get pulled outside and lectured--ahem, I mean "coached"-- on chatting up the patrons, pushing the gameday shirts (which suck), being super friendly, etc. This frustrates me sometimes, because I feel like they're not doing me justice--I'm learning, I'm doing my best, and I'm getting good. I'm enthusiastic. I'm such an eager-to-please kind of person and this job is really bringing that out in me. One of my bosses pulled me aside and told me I'm doing a great job, which made me feel better. I'm constantly smiling and being helpful. To be honest, I think this job will really, really help me with my communication and small talk...skills, for lack of a better word. I instinctively hate small talk; it's so impersonal, vague and meaningless. But, it's essential. It's a momentary gap between two people, bridging the awkwardness of not knowing each other. It makes people feel more comfortable. That's important, especially when they're supposed to be buying stuff. Lesson learned. Check, please?

ha, I loathe small talk as well, but I'm working on it.
