Sarcasm: A Time and a Place

Okay, so I'm all about sarcasm. I think it's funny--when used appropriately; I think it's fun to do; I think it shows wit and depth of understanding. HOWEVER I also think, if overused, it's just plain annoying and arrogant. Let me explain: used sparingly, ironic turns of phrase and flat, monotone responses can be unexpected and humorous. I like stuff like that. Who doesn't? On the other hand, if your voice is constantly monotone and flat and if your phrases are all ironic and attempting to be "witty" it's just too much. It bugs the crap out of me. People use this to sound clever; people use it to avoid being literal and therefore plain-jane; people use it to bely their true emotions. People just tend to use it TOO MUCH. If you are actually afraid of a test that approaches, don't say--flatly--"Oh, joy. I can't wait." Instead, say "Wow, I'm pretty anxious about this exam." Be straight, people. Say what you mean! Save the irony up, use it later when we're not expecting it.

Okay. I'm done now.
