I am taking a little break from a late-night project that I'm finishing up. It is for 3D Design II, and I love it. It's a tree. Made of q-tips. And it is so cool.
I had originally begun this random, molecule-looking thing. I didn't like it from the get-go, and liked it less and less with each passing q-tip addition. I took it home last week, thinking that I would somehow salvage it, and oops, don't you know it somehow got smashed in my back seat? Pity. Anyhow, I started something new about three more times until just hours ago, laying down for a nap, I suddenly knew exactly what I wanted. This is why I am an art minor: because art is fun, it is creative, and it is so far from science that I just manage to stay sane.
On Tuesday I turn in our wood project. For the past week and a half I have been working in the art wood shop, cutting and sanding and marking and...sneezing a lot. I LOVE it there. I find myself really, really disappointed that our project had ended so soon. At first I was really nervous; I had never used power saws before, or sanded or worked with wood period. Now I wish it was a whole class by itself.
It was interesting, Monday: I had my advising appointment with the Honors college. I change advisors every semester, so I had never met this guy before. We started going over my prospective classes and he saw that I am an art minor and he was just flabbergasted. He kept telling me how neat it was, that people talk about doing this sort of thing, but I was walking the walk, or something like that. It was interesting and encouraging. I minored in art because I love doing it, and because I don't want biology to be my life. It was really nice to hear someone so enthusiastic about what I'm doing. Sometimes I forget about the reason I do things, and about the endpoints I'm trying to achieve. Sometimes I get so down on myself that I don't realize that hey, I'm doing just fine. In fact, I'm doing pretty well. I'm doing what I want to do. I'm glad he reminded me of that, and that what I am doing means something.
I have to finish my tree. I will post a picture later.

A tree out of qtips? That sounds very impressive and quite interesting :o) Its good to hear encouragement every now and then, especially when we find ourselves sacrificing precious time that we could be doing other things. Take care Kris.
