My job is…a strange one. I’ve done the 9-5 thing, I’ve done the restaurant biz, I’ve done the amazingly mundane. This job I have is a strange mixture of many things. It is confusing, scary, boring, exciting, interesting, disenchanting, and cool. So far I have: plucked, cleaned and digested feathers from a dead owl, I have necropsied numerous mallards, weighed finch organs, sifted dirt, caught and weighed dragonflies…the randomness just goes on and on. In between I read, and….read. That’s the worst part, of course: the reading.
My summer so far has been pretty awesome. My job isn’t what I expected, but that’s okay. I have gotten to play softball, volleyball and tennis. My serve is getting much better, my volleyball skills have greatly improved, and softball, well…softball is just plain fun. My two friends here have made my life so much more enjoyable than it could have been. I look forward to my evenings, the movies and the outings and the random adventures. We laugh a lot, we understand each other. I’ve gotten to go to San Antonio twice so far, and each time was amazing. I’ve gotten to know my fellow HHMI’ers better, and I have to say that I really am grateful for this program. These people are my kind of people—intelligent, sarcastic, silly, funny, fun. I live in an awesome home (thank you, Grandma!! I know you’re reading!), and I’m just in a really good place. I’m excited. I’m happy. I’m in love. I’m feeling pretty amazing. Woot!
